This story showcases many things and the structure of it, is what makes it successful. Showing the couple in the present and flashing back to the past, included the conversation they had both in the past and present, and its relativeness of it all came together soundly to produce this story. The characters are two women in a relationship with each other and one would love to get married but the other desperately would love to have her parent’s approval of simply who she is and who she loves.
The conflict is shown within the character development of the reluctant girlfriend and that conflict shows up again at the end but quickly is resolved by her parents being there for their surprise wedding. Another conflict is the eager girlfriend convincing her reluctant girlfriend that her parents might accept their relationship. This is resolved by having her reluctant girlfriend’s parents at this surprise wedding. Conflict was shown in a few ways with the characters in this story, human vs humans, human vs self, and subtlety human vs society.
The exposition of this story is mainly as a fly on the wall with flashbacks also in the same way and ends with text on the screen. This love story was told in a way that was relatable, human, and invokes emotions. This story stuck with me because it was the first commercial I’ve seen on TV that was focused on two women in a relationship and wanting to get married. The significance for me was personally touching but is also for anyone that loves love stories.
Overall, the way this story was developed gave a refreshing spin of “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” to “Destiny Happens Here. Because at the end of the day, love can maybe be found in Vegas and what this video did for me was make me feel comfortable that it would be a safe place to get married as a gay woman, and for me, that spoke volumes.
